Sum 41 to Break Up

 The pop-punk group will embark on a farewell tour and release one more album before disbanding

Ontario pop-punk outfit Sum 41 are breaking up. The band announced the news on social media earlier today (May 8). “Being in Sum 41 since 1996 brought us some of the best moments of our lives,” the group wrote. “We are forever grateful to our fans both old and new, who have supported us in every way.” 

They went on to reveal that “Sum 41 will be disbanding,” but assured fans that they will finish their current tour and will announce worldwide farewell trek in the near future. Sum 41’s upcoming double album, Heaven :x: Hell, will mark their final LP. Find the band’s full statement below.

Sum 41 skyrocketed to fame in 2001 when their punk-rap track “Fat Lip” took over radio airwaves, was repeatedly played on MTV’s Total Request Live and wound up at No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart. 

The song appeared on the band’s debut album, All Killer No Filler, which produced subsequent radio singles such as “In Too Deep” and “Motivation.” They have released seven studio albums in the ensuing years, the most recent of which was 2019’s Order in Decline.

Guitarist Deryck Whibley, drummer Steve Jocz, bassist Richard Roy, and vocalist Jon Marshall formed Sum 41 in 1996. Whibley is now the band’s lead vocalist and he’s also the only remaining original member, joined in Sum 41 by guitarists Dave Baksh and Tom Thacker, bassist Jason McCaslin, and drummer Frank Zummo.

Being in Sum 41 since 1996 brought us some of the best moments of our lives. We are forever grateful to our fans both old and new, who have supported us in every way. It is hard to articulate the love and respect we have for all of you and we wanted you to hear this from us first.

Sum 41 will be disbanding. We will still be finishing all of our current upcoming tour dates this year, and we’re looking forward to releasing our final album “Heaven :x: Hell,” along with a final worldwide headlining tour to celebrate. Details will be announced as soon as we have them.

ALL MUSIC AND LYRICS IN OCCULTUS MYSTICISM DEMO WERE WRITTEN BY BATARA GURU MASIRBI RABKA.

Show LANGSUIR di Muar, Johor (4/6/23) dan Sibu, Sarawak (30/9/23) adalah sempena menyambut ulangtahun ke-30 kelahiran demo Occultus Mysticism yang dirilis pada tahun 1993.

Tanpa demo Occultus Mysticism, tiada siapa yang kenal akan LANGSUIR.

LANGSUIR sendiri ditubuhkan 2 tahun sebelumnya (1991). Ketika itu, founders masih bersekolah.

Batara Guru Masirbi Rabka sendiri belajar di MRSM Muar (1991-92) dan pada ketika di asrama itulah lagu-lagu di dalam Occultus Mysticism dicipta menggunakan gitar kapok.

Beliau sahaja yang tegar mencipta lagu-lagu LANGSUIR tatkala rakan-rakan sekolah semuanya memainkan lagu-lagu rock leleh dari kumpulan rock leleh Mega, Exists, Gersang, UG14, Teja, Terrarosa dan sebagainya.

Lagu-lagu yang dimainkan oleh Batara ketika itu kedengaran asing dan jelek oleh golongan mat rock leleh di MRSM. Dikritik sebagai lagu-lagu takde chord progression, takde struktur, sumbang dan sebagainya. Dengan lain perkataan, hina.

Namun Batara berjaya mempengaruhi beberapa rakan MRSM untuk bersama dengan perjuangan underground. Dan mereka ini telah membantu semasa sesi rehearsal lagu-lagu Occultus Mysticism di studio jamming di Muar. Mereka-mereka ini, walaupun bukan ahli band LANGSUIR tetapi sedikit sebanyak memberi bantuan kepada Batara.

Arwah Abang Mustapha adalah adik kepada salah seorang anggota band SENSELESS dari Kuching, Sarawak yang kemudiannya Abang Mustapha menjadi drummer band SPUTUM.

Studio jam tersebut merupakan juga studio band Operation Corpse prektis sebab dalam jadual terpampang nama Operation Corpse. Operation Corpse kemudiannya menukar nama kepada Samurai.

Di MRSM juga, Batara telah mempengaruhi seorang budak yang pandai melukis bernama Farid Gilone kepada dunia underground dengan memberi dengar kaset-kaset dan fanzine seperti Zulmat, Satanic Obstetrical, Karakatuar dsbgnya. Akibat terpengaruh, Farid mula melukis imej2 setan dan hantu sesuai dengan suasana underground ketika itu.

Salah satu dari lukisan Farid Gilone telah menjadi cover demo Occultus Mysticism yang terkenal itu yang menunjukkan setan dibalut seperti Mummy yang berdiri di atas simbol Necronomicon. Artwork ini bukan sahaja monumental dari segi penampilannya tetapi juga sangat berseni.

Setelah selesai SPM di MRSM Muar, Batara kembali ke Ipoh dan bersama dengan ahli band yang lain, menyiapkan dan memperkemaskan lagu-lagu dalam demo Occultus Mysticism. Akhirnya sesi rakaman pun dibuat di Universal Studio, Klang pada tahun 1993 di bawah pengawasan Arwah Is (Glottis) dan Ajak Dethkrane (Ultra Hingax Prod) dengan kos RM350. 

Bass dimainkan oleh Arwah Faizal (Bearkey) yang juga merupakan ahli anggota Athotorgh ketika itu.

Ternyata demo tersebut umpama tsunami apabila dirilis. Ia melonjakkan nama Langsuir ke persada muzik underground Malaysia dan masih disebut2 sehingga kini. Bahkan ia berterusan diulang cetak oleh Nebiula Production sehingga kini dan tetap sold out. Yang cetak rompak pun jual habis juga.

Ia juga menyebabkan satu label dari Germany, Nazgul Eyrie Production (RIP) menelefon dari German pada tahun 1994 dan bercakap dengan Batara untuk sign dengan mereka. Somehow, perkara itu tak menjadi. Lagipun Batara ketika itu setengah gila belajar di UTM sedangkan yang lainnya di Ipoh. Jadi, nak komit tu susah.

Punya gila belajar kat UTM sampaikan gig pertama LANGSUIR di Garfunkel Pub, KL 11/9/93 pun Batara tak main sebab pada hari gig itu Batara ada ujian pertengahan. UTM ketika itu dikenali sebagai Universiti Tendang Menendang sebab ramainya pelajar yang kena tendang keluar sebab tak lepas gred. 

(Trivia - Batara juga telah menarik diri dari Langsuir pada tahun 2008 kerana mau fokus pada PhD beliau di Adelaide, Australia - dengan lain perkataan, Batara mendahulukan pelajaran lebih dari band - what a poser! hahaha)

Gig tersebut, Batara telah diganti oleh Dark-E (Necrotic Chaos/Sil Khannaz).

Mulanya demo tersebut dub sendiri sahaja di rumah dengan harga RM6 menggunakan kaset kosong yang dibeli di kedai. Cover dibuat oleh Azlanthor secara manual tangan sahaja. Inlay sekadar fotostat dengan kertas berwarna.

Kemudiannya ia dicetak oleh East Gothic Production (Kuantan) di Singapura sebanyak 500 keping. Kaset tersebut di'seludup' keluar dari Singapura secara fizikal oleh anggota-anggota LANGSUIR ketika itu. Nasib baik tak kena tahan, kalau kena tahan tak tau berapa RM kena bayar tax haha...

Jumpa di Muar dan Sibu ya dan bersama-sama menyambut kelahiran demo Occultus Mysticism.

Does music really sound better on vinyl?

Most probably, but not for the reasons you are thinking of.

If you go round to your friend the audiophile’s house, and he gets out a vinyl and puts it on his record player, and you hear it coming through his big, 4 foot high speakers, it sounds absolutely amazing. Way better than anything you’re normally hearing.

But why?

1. The music he just put on is from his precious collection of great albums.
2. It’s coming through big, 4 foot high speakers, rather than tinny ear buds
3. His hifi (as they were called) has been carefully balanced for the ideal sound. Your earbuds or, worse, Dr Dres, on which you turned up the bass on your iPhone when you first got it and never worked out how to turn it down again, are not.
4. He has ideal separation between his speakers, for a perfect stereo image. You’re not even hearing stereo on headphones—you’re hearing binaural.
5. The album in question was recorded with low compression and played back with high amplification. It has 40dB of dynamic range. You can hear the gentle whisper of needle noise, but it doesn’t bother you. Your Carly Rae Jepsen album was recorded with the limiter set to maximum, and, despite the possibilities of digital (96dB dynamic range or better), has an actual dynamic range of 11dB on a good day, and 4dB on a bad one. (More is better.)
6. There’s a psychological effect of sitting in his sitting room, listening to carefully curated music.
7. The album artwork is immense, so the imaginative journey you go on is also much bigger.

In principle, CD or AAC can give a much better quality, but it is not usually reflected in the listening experience. It’s mainly heard on headphones, car speakers, or on boxes with a separation of about 12 inches. The headphones have got built in compensation to make some kinds of music sound better, which makes most kinds of music sound worse. There are only a few truly great albums. Most of them were recorded in the days of vinyl, and wrestling with the problems of vinyl was part of the creative process. In other words, they made the most of the medium.

There’s nothing about vinyl itself which is intrinsically better. It’s just that a huge amount of care went into production, packaging and reproduction of vinyl records. A better medium — CD or low compression audio files — will not be as good if less care has gone into the track as a whole, and the listening presentation.

There are a few people offering to edit the answer to say that vinyl is intrinsically better because sound is analogue.

This represents a misunderstanding. The sound you hear is ‘analogue’ (actually, it isn’t ‘analogue’, it’s just sound). It is transmitted to your speakers by an analogue means, and your speakers turn it from an electrical signal into sounds your ear can hear. This is a non-linear process, which is why some speakers sound better than others. At the other end, it has to be converted from sound into an electrical signal — by way of electromagnetism — through a microphone. It goes through a mixing desk, and various compressors, and, for analogue, magnetic tape, all of which add non-linearity. If it goes onto vinyl, it then goes through a physical process of transmuting electrical signals into grooves, and, on the player, the needle then converts these back into electrical signals. All of these are non-linear processes. Digital is just a different kind of conversion.

If you’ve ever worked with analogue tape, or analogue camera film, or any other analogue recording medium, you will remember just how hard it was to stop the intrinsic discontinuities and artefacts of analogue from destroying the signal. When you put something onto magnetic tape — and almost all analogue recordings after the early days were done this way, even if they ended up on vinyl — you are breaking it down into granular form like digital. The difference is that tape is stochastically granular, whereas digital is a granular matrix. But you’ve still split it into chunks. If the chunks are small enough, then you will not hear the difference.
